This project is designed to use a Functional Grammar/Text in Context approach to analyse the language and communication demands that might be placed on someone for whom English is a second language within a particular social, work or educational context.
Research Question:
Can the Systemic Functional Grammar model of text in context and its multifunctional grammatical analysis be used to explore and detail the different language and communication demands that might be placed on a speaker/writer as they learn to live, study or work in a specific context?
Steps Select a context – a workplace, a social context or an educational setting, and texts. Identify a range of text types that a speaker/write might encounter in the context. Consider the variations. Select a range of texts (3 – 5) for close analysis and consideration. Undertake a detailed Genre and Context of Situation analysis of the selected texts. Describe the genre of each text by identifying its purpose and structure. Provide a full description of the Field, Tenor and Mode of each text. Execute a detailed lexico-grammatical analysis of selected portions of each of these texts(100 – 150 words of each text). Interpret the above analysis and your findings in light of the different linguistic/communicative demands they might place on a speaker/writer. Reflect on the value of the analytical approach to understanding the challenges for people for whom English is a second language.
